Words and Phrases to Avoid When Youre Job Searching

Words and Phrases to Avoid When Youre Job SearchingWords and Phrases to Avoid When Youre Job SearchingThere are some things you should say when youre job searching, and there are others that are better left unsaid. Its always important to keep your job search positive, even if you dont feel great about yourself or having to find a new job. Negativity is easy to pick up during a job interview, and employers dont want to hire negative, cranky, or difficult people. There is power in positivity and companies want to hire employees who do their best to look on the bright side and avoid complaining. The words you use during networking meetings and interviews should reflect a positive outlook, as well as your enthusiasm for being considered for a job or a referral. If you come across as negative, if your ability to carry on a conversation is limited, or if your vocabulary is punctuated by slang, acronyms, and too many fillers such as umm or like or you know its not going to make the best im pression. What to Say When Youre Interviewing and Networking What to say to networking contacts and hiring managers is relatively simple. Its important to keep it professional and to avoid anything too rolleal. The person interviewing you doesnt need to know about your personal life, your family, your friends, your politics, or anything else unrelated to employment. The interviewer may ask questions like What are you passionate about? To learn more about you and how you would fit in with the company culture, but let them bring it up first. Then carefully respond to any inquiries, keeping the focus as much on work as possible. Theres no need to volunteer personal information. Sharing too much can hinder your chances of getting hired if it raises a red flag about your availability or your qualifications for the job. The bottom line is that the hiring manager wants to know why you are qualified for the job, and thats what you should highlight in your conversations. Take the time to match your qualifications to the job, and focus on your strongest credentials. With networking contacts, it depends. When youre meeting or talking to a business contact, the same rules as discussing personal information with an interviewer apply. Keep it professional. If you know the person youre connecting with personally, and well, its fine to share more. Taking the time to prepare and to connect appropriately will ensure every networking meeting you have will be a success. What Not to Say During a Job Search One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is not brushing up on their communication skills prior to meetings and job interviews. One of the criteria employers use when selecting applicants to hire is the ability to communicate well, and a candidate who is lacking the basics will have a harder time getting hired. What shouldnt you say when youre looking for a job? What terms are going to make an employer think twice about hiring you? The words and paroles to avoid usin g fit into two categories. Topics To Not Bring Up There are topics that should be off-limits when talking to a prospective employer or even to a networking contact, like these I hate my jobI didnt get along with my bossThe company welches awful to work forThat wasnt my jobI wasnt paid enoughI need time off forCan the schedule be changed? There are also the terms that are part of everyday conversation but dont come across well when youre discussing employment with a hiring manager. Even an awesome or a but can interrupt the flow of conversation. Cringeworthy Words and Phrases ActuallyAhAwesomeButChillHuhHmmI didnt mean toI dont knowI dont rememberI meanI meantI triedI wouldntKind ofLikeTotallyUhhUh-huhUh-ohUh-uhUmmYou guysYou knowYou know what I mean Tips for Keeping It Professional at a Job Interview Get rid of the filler words. It can be hard to eliminate some of the unnecessary words that you use all the time from your professional vocabulary, but if you practice youll soon be able to speak more fluently in a professional setting. Tip If you listen to yourself talk, youll hear how often you use fillers. That can be a good way to start eliminating them from your professional conversations. Use proper grammar and avoid slang. Thats especially true if youre in a role where business communication skills are vital. Youll be representing your employer, and the organization will expect you to be able to carry on a high-level discussion. Tip Practice answering interview questions and talking in complete sentences. Ask a friend or family member to help or record yourself speaking to get a sense of what you can improve upon. The more comfortable you are discussing your qualifications, the easier it will be. Take time to respond. Even though you may feel like you need to blurt out an interview answer immediately, you dont have to. It is acceptable to frame a response and know what youre going to say before you start talking. Tip Wait for a second or two bef ore you talk. It will be easier to focus on what you want to say when you give yourself a little time to phrase it.

Even Apples CEO, Tim Cook, gets sucked in by online critics

Even Apples CEO, Tim Cook, gets sucked in by online criticsEven Apples CEO, Tim Cook, gets sucked in by online criticsWhen Apple CEO Tim Cook wakes up around 4 a.m., he has an alfruchtwein masochistic morning routine.I like to take the first hour and go through user comments and things like this that sort of focus on the external people that are so important to us, Cook told Axios. In practice, that means that the head of one of the worlds most successful companies takes 60 minutes a day - almost 22,000 minutes per year - to read our tantrums or praise on what we do or dont like about his products. One has to wonder how many arbitrary or downright wrong comments Cook sifts through before landing on a good one that actually informs his business model. Or does his staff do the searching for him? After Cooks light reading, he heads to the gym for stress control. But even as he tries to cut back on his screen time, he said he still spends a few hours each day on his phone. CEOs - theyre just like usMorning routinesCook is not the only one whose morning routine has been in the spotlight as of late. Even pregnant duchess Meghan Markle wakes upat 5 a.m. and gets to work, and though the royal staff is reportedly not very happy about it, its likely what made zu sich so successful in her own right. So can your morning routine really make or break you? Some experts do indeed believe that rising earlyand other tips can make you a millionaire, or have otherwise unforeseen positive consequences for your work and life. But caution Early to rise also means early to bed. Sleep scientists recommend 8.5 hours of shut-eye every night to reach peak productivity, so one day you too can be like Cook, reading endless user comments before the crack of dawn.

6 fun team bonding activities that arent happy hour

6 fun team bonding activities that aren't happy hour 6 fun team bonding activities that aren't happy hour Although it’s nice to occasionally kick back a few brewskis with your work wife, having a team happy hour be the only time that you bond with your coworkers outside of the office isn’t great for your health or your wallet. A recent study published in the journal  Alcoholism: Clinical Experimental Research  found that even light drinking  - defined as just having a drink or two per sitting  - more than three times in a week could increase your mortality rate (your risk of dying sooner) by  20 percent. What’s more, always choosing to bond with your team over happy hour can get a little boring and monotonous. So here are six alternative group activities that don’t revolve around alcohol. Your work friend who recently swore off booze will thank you when you pitch these at your next team meeting.1. Take a cooking classCooking classes are a great bonding activity because the worse your team is at cooking, the more laughs you’ll have together and the closer you’ll become. Plen ty of organizations like NYC-based  Rustico Cooking  offer team-building cooking classes that are perfect for corporations looking to socialize outside the office. For  $135 a person, Rustico Cooking will host a private cooking class for you and up to 149 of your colleagues. You and your team can choose to make pizza from scratch, make your own fresh pasta or attempt a five-course meal of your choosing. Those who do want to drink can take advantage of the organization’s deal  that includes  a half bottle of house wine per person.Depending on what city you live in, these classes tend to get a little pricey, so you might want to save this event for a special occasion like a colleague’s birthday or for your organization’s next milestone celebration.2. Take an improv comedy classLike Micheal Scott from “The Office,” we could all benefit from some improv training (and if you’ve never watched “The Office,” we highly recommend that you do that right now). Successful organiz ations like Google and PepsiCo are known for taking their employees through improv training, both to  improve communication  among team members and to help teams bond.If you and your team are looking to boost creativity and have a lot of laughs in the process, taking an improv class together is a great way to do just that. If you live in a city like New York or Los Angeles, you’ll have your pick of improv studios to choose from. But if you live in a smaller town or one that isn’t an acting hub, chances are that your local theater offers improv classes as well. Do a little digging and you can find improv classes that’ll cost  $20 or less  per person - even in a big city.3. Go go-kartingIf you’re looking for some friendly competition with your team that doesn’t revolve around work-related performance, then a trip to a go-karting track might be just what the doctor ordered. You’ll get an adrenaline high that classic team outings like miniature golf and bowling don’t prov ide. Depending on where you live and which go-karting location you choose, this activity typically costs around  $60 per person. And most locations provide a trophy to the winner of the race, so one of your coworkers can proudly flaunt his or her victory at the office.4. Bond over board gamesOne of the cheapest and most fun ways to bond with your colleagues outside of work is to set up a board game marathon. The combination of childhood nostalgia and a little friendly competition will get even the quietest of coworkers to open up in no time. Set the board games up in a conference room or designate someone’s apartment for the bonding activity. Make things interesting by including prizes for winners  - just use a bunch of knick-knacks from The Dollar Store. Make sure to include classics like Candy Land, Jenga, Guess Who? and, of course, Monopoly in your board game selection.5. Form a sports league (that doesn’t require a ton of athleticism)Joining an adult intramural sports leagu e and forming a team with your colleagues is a great way to both bond outside of work and to motivate each other to exercise.  Most intramural sports leagues  meet once a week for 45 minutes to an hour, but if one  of your team members can’t make it, they can always have another one of your colleagues take their place. Consider picking a sport like kickball  or even cornhole to make the activity accessible to even the least athletic of your colleagues. Depending on where you live and what sport you pick, joining an adult intramural sports league typically costs between $30 and $70  per player.6. Get your karaoke onInstead of grabbing drinks at a boring ol’ bar, consider kicking your post-work social hour up a notch by going to a karaoke bar instead. Since the event is less centered around drinks and more centered around you belting your heart out, even those who abstain from alcohol will have a good time. Depending on where you live and how many people you bring, you can typical ly rent out your own private karaoke room at most bars for  $25 an hour. This  article  was originally published on  Swirled.com  in the Thrive section, which covers valuable  career and personal finance content  for Millennials.

Irish Wisdom for Job Seekers

Irish Wisdom for Job Seekers Irish Wisdom for Job Seekers Irish Wisdom for Job Seekers St. Patrick's Day got me thinking of all the old Irish sayings I've heard over the years. For some reason, this one has always resonated with me: Don't break your shin on a stool that is not in your way. It makes me think of all the ways we can sabotage our own job search efforts, puttingup imaginary barriers and allowing a lack of confidence to hold us back. Most of these self-limiting thoughts boil down to two big worries:fear of inadequacy and/or fear of discrimination. I'm not good enough Most people start out inexperienced, with limited skills. Most people are not computer whizzes. Most people don't have college degrees. Most people don't know all the rules of resume writing, interviewing, or negotiating salary. Most people have gaps in their resumes. Most people are unsure of themselves. And yetmost people who want to work have jobs. And most people, when they leave or lose their jobs, find another one often better than the last! I might face discrimination. Yes, you might. There are jerks out there. If you meet one, walk away and try again don't give them the power to stop you. People of both genders, and all ages, races, religions, sizes, sexual orientations, and abilities have good jobs. Employers want to hire enthusiastic human beings with the ability and desire to learn and to contribute to the success of their businesses. You can do that. In closing, I'll leave you with a couple more reminders from the Oul' Sod: Nobody ever said t'would be easy, and You'll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind. So stop worrying about tripping over a stool and take a solid step toward your career goals today. As the ancient 'Irishman' Lao Tzu said, A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

How to get what you want in your performance review

How to get what you want in your performance review How to get what you want in your performance review It’s the most wonderful time of the year - and I’m not talking about the holidays.I’m talking about your annual performance review at your company. The performance review is one of the most important  tools of communication  an employer has at her disposal. This annual, bi-annual, or even quarterly review of an employee allows employer and employee to speak directly. However, despite what you may think, an annual review is not just about the employee’s performance. It is about everybody’s performance.Let’s reframe how we think about reviews - and how to make sure  you get what you want  out of your next one. There is no reason to fret over your upcoming performance review. Instead of worrying about what feedback management might have, think instead of what  you  want.  Make a few lists. What have you achieved over the past twelve months? What would you like to achieve over the next twelve? In what ways (if any) has management been lacking? What resources do you require to be successful? What is a performance review? The  performance review  is a rare opportunity for an employee to have dedicated time in which to communicate wins, losses, struggles, ideas, wants, needs, and hopes for her future at the company. The best part? All of these things are communicated directly to your management, often face to face. So what do you want over the next year? Do you want a raise? Do you need more support in your department? Are you unhappy with management? Do you want to change your role? We’ll walk you through a few common  scenarios so that you get what you need out of your next annual review. The number one rule of a performance review?  Come prepared. How do I get a raise in my performance review?Let’s be real here. Most employees are going into a performance review hoping to see some zeros added to their annual salary. Before asking for a raise in a performance review, ask yourself  if it’s the right time. When  asking for a raise, you can’t really just ask. Instead, make a case for why you absolutely deserve a raise.Create a script to ask for your raise  (we made one for you.) Communicate to your manager all of your successes over the past year. Make sure your boss knows exactly what you bring to the team,  the new skills you have acquired, what praise you have received over the past year, and your detailed plans for future success.Don’t  go in asking for an arbitrary raise. Don’t complain about your bills, your rent, or your (very real) student loans. These are reasons you may need a raise, but they are not the same reasons as to  why  you deserve a raise. How do I get a promotion in my performance review?Maybe you’re not necessarily looking for a raise, per se, but  a promotion via title change. While the two typically go hand in hand, asking for a title change has nuanced differences. So, when you want that specialist title changed to a Manager role, be prepared to explain why.A great way to start some research for this discussion is by looking at job descriptions. If you have a coordinator title, but you feel like your role is that of a manager, communicate that. Show your duties alongside a standard job description for the title you want. Are you already doing all the work of a manager or a director without the title? If so, present the evidence to your boss. If your desired title requires more work or a development of a certain skill set, present plans to strengthen and hone these skills. By showing your manager a side-by-s ide job title comparison, you are presenting a pretty irrefutable case for your title promotion. You don’t have to avoid asking for more money because you’re nervous about it. If you’re asking for a promotion because you are already outperforming in your current position, you must also  ask for a raise. No questions asked. Do it.How do I switch my role in my performance review?Maybe you’re happy with your salary and happy at your current company. The culture is great, the commute is short, and the upper management is awesome. That’s great news.Maybe  you’re looking to transition roles - and not necessarily in an upward motion. Let’s say you are in an administrative position, but you have recently started taking on responsibilities of a social media manager.Maybe you want to transition into the marketing department full time. A performance review is a perfect time to have discussions like this.Again, lay out your achievements over the past year, specifically highlightin g your “newer” skill set. Provide a plan for a transition period in which you could train a replacement and slowly hand off your administrative duties. When planning a department transition, the stronger case and more work you present, the more likely it is that you will get interdepartmental approval. Hiring new employees is a costly pain for any business. By making both your transition and the onboarding of a new employee seamless, you’re more likely to have your role request approved. How do I get more support in my department? If  you’re overworked  and understaffed, I hope you have communicated this to management before your performance review. If you have reported this unsatisfactory work environment to no response, well, that is frustrating. If you haven’t brought your intense workload to management yet, what are you waiting for?Either way, when asking for more departmental resources, it’s important to come prepared to present the  why. Like we outlined earlier, it w ould be advantageous to come prepared to ask management to either create or fill a dedicated role that your team is struggling to maintain. If you work on a large number of long-term projects with no real owner, maybe your team needs a project manager. If your team is struggling to produce  quality product-based content, maybe it’s time to hire a content writer.Determine the areas in which you are departing your real role entirely. Are these extra responsibilities taking away from the core function of your role? If the answer is yes, present the ways in which your primary focus is being compromised. How do I report unsatisfactory management?Ugh, the worst. This has the potential to be one of the more awkward elements to attack in a performance review. Assuming you are speaking with or in the presence of management, these can be sensitive subjects.Depending on your complaints, you will want to manage it in different ways. When it’s mismanagement or micro-management, your review mi ght be a good time to offer constructive criticisms. Offer your frustrations in a constructive manner. If your boss tends to micromanage, offer instead a weekly meeting where you can update her on the progress of certain projects. If your manager is never in the office, a weekly meeting could also be a good way for her to check in and be aware of the happenings in the office.Whatever your complaint may be,  make sure it is as constructive as possible  and offer solutions where you can. Problem-solving is a highly-valued soft skill and this is a great arena in which to showcase it.When it’s something more serious like harassment or potentially illegal behaviors, you will want to approach human resources or corporate, if available. If you are in a smaller workplace or a company without an HR department, consider reporting harassment or misconduct to the  EEOC.In conclusionI’d be remiss if I ended this article here.It can be difficult to ask for what you deserve at work. As women, we tend to downplay our amazing achievements and keep trudging on while  men ask for what they want  (seemingly) at every turn.I’ll leave you with this tip. Always be aware of what you contribute to your workplace. An annual performance review is a good time to talk about achievements, changes, and kinks in the workplace. However, you should always feel empowered to  ask for what you have earned, no matter what time of year it may be. Go out and get it!This article was originally published on CareerContessa.

Study This one thing you do every day is detrimental to your health

Study This one thing you do every day is detrimental to your health Study This one thing you do every day is detrimental to your health It’s become almost instinctual. We slump into our office chairs, straining forward to see our laptop screens clearly. Our heads cock forward at an unnatural angle as our shoulders rise higher and higher. And then we wonder why we all have headaches at the end of the day.At this point, the negative health repercussions from bad posture are all but established. There’s a reason why we’re constantly told to sit up - what may have once started out as a command about appearances has proven to have real implications for our wellness. But while we may know somewhere deep down that we’re theoretically not supposed to slouch, a recent study published in the journal Biofeedback indicates that we’re not as cognizant of the bad habit in practice.Researchers conducted two experiments that got to the root of our posture problems. In one, they had 87 students try to rotate their heads from side to side with their heads erect or thrust forward. The vast majority of them said they could rot ate their head more easily and with a more generous range of motion when it was erect. Then came the big test. When 125 students were asked to scrunch their necks for 30 seconds, almost all of them reported pain including pressure in the head, a stiff neck, eye tension, and headaches. And here’s the doozy: “Most participants were totally surprised that 30 seconds of neck scrunching would rapidly increase symptoms and induce discomfort,” researchers wrote. As we sit in our offices all day, we’re unknowingly causing ourselves pain when we give in to our baser posture-related instincts. But at least acknowledging that there is a problem is always the first step to a solution. So here’s to a belated New Year’s resolution to be more aware of how we sit. It may seem like a passive part of our day, but sitting wrong could actually set us back dramatically on our pathways to wellness.

Take a Spin and a Splash on the Hydro Bike

Take a Spin and a Splash on the Hydro Bike Take a Spin and a Splash on the Hydro Bike Take a Spin and a Splash on the Hydro Bike In 2011, Guy Howard-Willis had the crazy idea to make a bike that could surf on water. Seven years of testing and prototyping resulted in the Hydrofoiler XE-1, which is a mix between an e-bike, surfboard, and hydrofoil. Howard-Willis and his partner, Roland Alonzo, call their contraption a hydrofoiler bike watercraft. When standing on the ground, it resembles a stationary bike used in gyms. Its not as heavy as a water scooter, and cruises on water assisted by a pedal and a 400 W e-bike motor. A motionless hydrofoil bike can submerge a few feet without sinking so it can be restarted without a rider swimming to shore. The bike is completely modularthe components that can be changed to alter power or buoyancy can be added to the XE-1 model.Guy Howard-Willis Combining pedal power and an electric motor, The Hydrofoiler XE-1 is a mix between an e-bike, surfboard, and hydrofoil. Image: Manta5 When I ride the Hydrofoiler, I can draw similarities to riding my road bikes. The issue was around mans ability on water, we have so many great watercraft out there, I wanted to push the envelope on what could be done for bicycle and water enthusiasts, Howard- Willis said. For You: Read ASME.orgs latest on manufacturing and design. Alonzo and Howard-Willis sell the Hydrofoiler XE-1 through Waikato, New Zealand-based Manta5, and at roughly $5,500, its not cheap. Hydrofoils started appearing in water sports like kitesurfing and windsurfing a decade ago, and thats when Howard- Willis started investigating the idea. A keen cyclist, he conceived of Hydrofoiler XE-1 after seeing hydrofoils being used in the Americas Cup yachting race. He then hooked up with Alonzo, a bike design specialist. For the first two years, both hid the idea of Hydrofoiler XE-1 from their families, more to escape embarrassment if the design didnt work out. Many years were spent drafting and designing prototypes with multiple component types. They applied rapid validation, with new components and parts being immediately tested. They tackled hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, electrical, and mechanical challenges, and the smaller picture approach gave them design flexibility. We spent early mornings at local pools and lakes validating with a number of enthusiastic riders. Thats a key part of our production process, we always hold our ideas lightly and we have an environment where everyones thoughts are valued and considered, Howard-Willis said. Critical components like the e-bike battery and motor benefitted immensely from these testing sessions. Battery life is about an hour for a 187 pound person, Manta5 estimates. The XE-1 is pedal assist that means you do need to pedal for this model to move forward. However, you can dial up the amount of work the motor is doing, so you might like to cruise and you would also have the motor at a high rate and be doing less pedaling, Howard-Willis said. The engineers implemented an aerodynamic design, and worked out complexities related to hydrofoiling and propeller positioning. Work also went into developing a drivetrain mechanism that transferred power from the pedals to the propeller. An aluminum and carbon fiber frame brought the weight down, and a nylon propeller provided thrust at the fastest speeds. The water bike works on salt and fresh water. The bike is completely modularthe components that can be changed to alter power or buoyancy can be added to the XE-1 model, Howard-Willis said. Q&A with Paul Hastings Global Diversity Chair, K Whitner

Q&A with Paul Hastings' Global Diversity Chair, K Whitner Q&A with Paul Hastings' Global Diversity Chair, K Whitner Paul Hastings is excited to bring you a QA session with K Whitner, chair of the Firm’s Global Diversity Committee, conducted by Rhonda Mims, Managing Director of Corporate Social Responsibilities.   Rhonda Mims and K Whitner RM: Thanks for chatting with me today, K! We are looking forward to learning about your career in law, path to partnership and what drove you to get involved with various committee roles. Can you speak about what drew you to a career in the legal industry and the beginning of your legal career? KW: Growing up, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer but was only familiar with what was shown in movies and on TV shows; so, being a successful lawyer only meant being a trial lawyer.   Upon graduating from Yale Law School, I was presented with two fulltime job offers- from the firm where I had been a summer associate and from Paul Hastings. I decided to join the firm where I had been a summer associate, which I now reflect back on noting; Paul Hastings is where I should have been all along.”   RM: What factored into your decision to later join Paul Hastings? KW:  Paul Hastings allows people the opportunity to come here with a clean slate and create their own destiny.   There is no blueprint for being at Paul Hastings, which enabled me to continue pursuing outside interests while working toward partnership- including my involvement with a recording studio, a record label, and a logistics company.   Through those outside opportunities, I learned lessons, which I still apply to my legal practice and client interactions.   RM:   How has your career as a lawyer impacted your personal life? KW:  As the husband of a fellow lawyer, and the father of two daughters, I am driven by my goal of simply being the best I can be.   Whether in the workplace or at home, I strive to maximize myself in everything. I admit that, despite all of the long hours we both work, sharing a profession with my wife has been very rewarding.   Appreciating the pressures, hard work and dedication that come with being a successful professional and understanding the time commitments that inevitably follow is something we share and pass on to our daughters as life lessons.   RM:   What advice can you give to law students transitioning from student to law firm professional? KW:  I encourage both recruits and young associates alike to forge their own paths because there’s no one way to be successful.   I am a strong advocate for individuality and doing what is unique to one’s own wants and needs.   Achieving “balance” is a personal endeavor.   Along those lines, a satisfying career is to be the best lawyer you individually can be, while maintaining a personal sense of satisfaction and the results and success will follow.   RM: Reflecting on your career, can you summarize the impact Paul Hastings has had? KW:  Although the path to partnership was not an easy one, I am satisfied with where I have gone so far.   Working at Paul Hastings, a firm that not only accepts individuality, but encourages it and that believes in transparency, provided an environment that allows me to reach my full potential.   I don't know that I would still be practicing law had I not been at Paul Hastings.   RM: What does diversity mean to you? KW: Diversity means embracing and recognizing the value in all the differences amongst us that make us one firm, on society, one humanity. This is a sponsored blog post from Paul Hastings. 7 Tips for an Effective One Page Resume

7 Tips for an Effective One Page Resume 7 Tips for an Effective One Page Resume You have more than a decade’s worth of experience, yet you are being asked to make a one-page resume. Writing an effective one-page resume is possible, so we offer 7 tips on how to achieve the best one-page resume. The best resume length advice will always help a recruiter, hiring manager, or employer read your resume in six-seconds. 1. Stick to the “quantitative” results It is no secret that the right keywordswill help get your resume seen. Companies know job candidates do this. They do not care so much about “what you claim to do”. They care if you know “how to do it”. Quantitative results show evidence that you can execute. An effective one-page resume shows numbers that prove your qualifications, thus making your resume shorter. As one hiring manager explained to me: “We need to know you can walk the walk, not just talk the talk.” 2. Leave out irrelevant experience Your LinkedIn resume and CV is the place for your career “autobiography”. An effective one-page resume sticks to relevant experience. If you are applying for a position as a Technical Project Manager, for example, some resume length advice would be to leave off all the side jobs you took while job searching. This means you may have several “best one page resumes”, one for each job title you can be hired for. 3. Leave out irrelevant education A one-page resume is easier to achieve if you leave out the irrelevant education. Your high school education is almost always irrelevant on any job application unless you are just starting your career. Even then, they only want to know that you completed high school. 4. Using smaller font sizes Warning: This does not mean the best one-page resume needs to be seen under a microscope. An effective one-page resume can happen with a font size of 10 or 11. Going lower than that can leave the hiring manager squinting and reaching for their glasses. A one-page resume is intended to save time and make for easier reading. A tiny font may fit more, but then it is more difficult to read. 5. Get all your contact information on one line An effective one-page resume has all the contact information on the top line. In the past, it was common to make your name look like a theater marquis. But that was before short attention spans, online job applications, and attaching files to emails in which your name appears several times. Having all the info on the top line also makes it much simpler to find. 6. Keep all job descriptions to a bullet-pointed, one line of spacing You may have had a complex job in the past but that does not mean your description of a skill should be more than one line. Your resume length advice here would be to cut down the number of words used to describe a task or skill. Make sure it fits on one line per task or skill. For example: “Led testing and development plan for next-generation Automated Driving Technologies.” There is a whole story behind that one line. The best one-page resume will almost offer a teaser to get an interview, in which the job candidate can expand on the full story of experience. 7. Kill the objectives or other useless lines Career objectives on resumes lost their meaning as companies realized the employee should focus more on the candidate’s ability to help with a company’s objective. An effective one-page resume will have no objectives and no lines stating “references available upon request” or “salary negotiable”. Note: Summaries have not lost their meaning. There is a big difference between summaries and objectives. Above all, an effective one-page resume is all about “impact”; those times in your career that you achieved productive results and what you did to get such results!
